Why are there no positive transgendered characters on TV?
Why is it that the only images of transgendered women we see on television are sluts on Jerry Springer or joke characters? Even on a show like "Nip/Tuck", Famke Janssen plays a sexy, alluring t-girl, but she is predatory and evil. Why can't we see on positive t-girls who lead normal lives and have normal jobs? They exist! I know, I'm engaged to a wonderful t-girl who has a normal life, goes to college, etc. She's not a stripper, a tease or an empty headed idiot like those portrayed on television. How long must the TG community wait for fair representation? Gays have "Will and Grace," lesbians have "Ellen" and "The L Word." When will we have "The TS Word?" I tried submitting a tv show idea that included positive TG characters, and it was rejected by every studio, even the small independents. Yet garbage like "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Tootsie" make big bucks. I don't get it.
Society tolerates cross-dressing for comedic purposes (Mrs.Doubtfire, etc.), but transgender people are another issue. They have to be demonized in some way, by being a psycho (like Nip/Tuck) or a desperate killer (CSI). When they're given any representation, the character's turned into a jerk (The L-Word's Ivan and Max). Although the L-Word's Max is a constant character, and he's starting to become more of a person. I think the writers weren't sure what to do with him at first, but he seems to be finding a good place. So at least there's one mostly positive character.
Also, All My Children is introducing a MtF trans character, named Zarf (yeah...I know, Zarf. But it is a soap opera), who will eventually be known as Zoe. Zoe will be a transgender woman and a lesbian, so there'll be lots of fun soap opera drama there.
But on the whole, you're right, transpeople aren't given fair representation in the media - the media wouldn't know how to even do it properly, as we've seen. I think they just don't understand that transpeople are normal, everyday people trying to become who they are, become comfortable in themselves and live a regular life. That's the plot I'd like to see.
